Weather

The climate of Gwangju is mostly warm with adequate precipitation due to its location inland near the west coast. There are many clear and dry days in spring and fall due to the high mobile atmospheric pressure. The first half of summer sees a lot of rainfall from the monsoonal front, but once the rainy season is over, the sweltering weather continues through until late summer as a result of the North Pacific anticyclones. Generally, the city sees about three typhoons a year around this time. Conversely, winter sees cold weather influenced by the continental high pressure cold-front, which expands from the northwest of Korea, and snow clouds formed in the West Sea bring frequent snowfall. The annual average temperature of Gwangju (1981-2010) is 13.8℃, with a lowest monthly temperature of 0.6℃ in January, and a highest monthly temperature of 26.2℃ in August. The annual average precipitation is 1,391㎜, about 57% of which falls during the summer season.
